World-renowned Artist Laszlo Tihany Invites Viewers Along On His Artistic Adventure
Where in the world does a young artist from Hungary go for inspiration? First he explores Italy, France and Germany, three countries whose art histories are among Europe's most influential from the Renaissance to Impressionism. Then this young artist crosses the Atlantic into America. >From the East Coast to the West Coast he continues his exploration, putting down roots only when he arrives in Arizona, He is struck by the deserts uncorrupted innocence an innocence that informs his paintings, metal art sculptures, and photography for the next 30 years.
At least that’s how contemporary artist Laszlo Tihany found his inspiration, and it has served his art well. After moving to Arizona in 1978, Laszlo won several first place awards for his photography. Soon after his metal art began to incorporate southwestern themes, especially the metal sculptures that soon found their way into nearly a dozen art galleries, from Santa Fe to San Francisco.
Yet as celebrated as his work was becoming, Laszlo chose to further his art education by taking classes in sculpture, photography and painting. This dedication to furthering himself as an artist, combined with his impressive body of work, earned him the attention of his local PBS station. In 1990, Laszlo presented his work on Tucson PBS-TV, an event that brought his art, and his story, to the local community.
Four years later, Laszlo co-founded Picci Designs with Arizona painter Linda Colino whose own paintings have earned her critical acclaim. Theirs is a partnership that continues to this day, blending contemporary, impressionistic and primitive styles. Picci Designs is a contemporary art studio built on an artistic philosophy that Laszlo and Linda call strength in simplicity of design qualities you can see in their captivatingly whimsical metal sculptures, paintings, photography, tribal masks, clocks and mirrors.
Today Laszlo most enjoys experimenting with abstract metal art forms that he describes as having a playful, spatial flow and release, and rotational symmetry. I want to give more than a colorful experience, he says. I want to intertwine my imagination with the viewers. Laszlo certainly accomplishes that with his provocative metal sculptures that leave plenty of room for the viewers own interpretation. So the artistic journey Laszlo Tihany embarked on alone more than three decades ago is now one that he walks hand-in-hand with those for whom his art is an adventure all its own.
